DISABLED trade unionists swore yesterday to step up the fight against the Conservative government’s disability benefits cuts.

In an emergency motion presented to this year’s TUC disabled workers’ conference, campaigners pledged that they would reverse the scrapping of benefits such as the employment support allowance and the personal independence payment.

Transport union RMT delegate Janine Booth shared stories of people’s suicidal feelings after their support had been withdrawn.

“We welcome the immediate response from the Labour front bench to oppose these cuts,” read the motion.

It was passed unanimously, with TUC disabled members agreeing to mount “lobbying, demonstrations and direct action” to achieve their purpose.
