Council bids to get rid of protest camp at town hall

HOMELESS people camping out in Manchester are launching a legal battle today against a court ruling telling them to leave.

About 20 homeless people are camping outside Manchester Town Hall in protest over homelessness in the city.

On Monday the council was granted a possession order telling the protesters to leave.

But solicitor Ben Taylor of Waddell Taylor Brian will fight the protesters’ case.

“My instructions are to have the order for possession set aside or appeal against it on the basis that the judge should not have made the order,” he told the Morning Star.

“A homeless person — provided that person is unintentionally homeless — is entitled to accommodation provided by the local authority.”

The camp was set up last week after a 200-strong march in the city.
