Coroner: Tahir Mehmood detention death was ‘natural’

The family of a man who died in a Manchester detention centre expressed disappointment yesterday after the coroner reported that he died of “natural causes.”

Tahir Mehmood came to Britain from Pakistan in 2007. His work visa ran out and in July 2013 he was taken to Pennine House detention centre at Manchester airport to be put on a flight.

He collapsed after complaining of feeling ill but was initially given only a paracetamol.

When paramedics were eventually called they tried unsuccessfully for an hour to revive him.

The Manchester inquest into his death ended this week and the coroner ruled that Mr Mehmood died from heart failure.

His brother-in-law Naeem Iqbal Gondal said: “Justice has not been done.”
