PLANS for a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point moved a step closer yesterday when construction contracts were announced.
French state-owned EDF announced that 60 per cent of the contracts would be awarded to British firms, which was welcomed by the GMB union, which represents workers in the nuclear sector.
GMB national secretary for energy Gary Smith hailed the announcement as “a huge step forward for low-carbon electricity in the UK.”
But the union raised concerns over the continued lack of clarity over Chinese investment on the site.
