Rail profiteers take millions off passengers caught short

GREEDY rail profiteers are making millions of pounds out of passengers desperate for the loo — while paying cleaners a pittance.

Rail union RMT said that contractors responsible for station lavatories across the country were guilty of “gross profiteering off the back of poverty pay.”

Network Rail figures show that over the last three years the top-earning station toilets were at Victoria (£2.3 million), Euston (£1.8m), Kings Cross (£1.4m) and Paddington (£1.2m) in London, Manchester Piccadilly (£1.1m) and Liverpool Lime Street (£1m).

RMT has been fighting a long-running battle with cleaning contractors over union recognition, working conditions and poverty pay.

“It is now clear that the exploitation of those workers and other station staff is lining the pockets of both Network Rail and their appointed contractors,” said RMT.

“It nails the lie that they cannot afford decent living wages for their staff.”
