Morning Star editor pays tribute to Michael Meacher

Star columnist dies after a short illness

Veteran Labour MP and Morning Star columnist Michael Meacher has died following a short illness.

The 75-year-old Oldham West and Royton MP was a key of supporter of Jeremy Corbyn during the Labour leadership campaign.

Morning Star editor Ben Chacko paid tribute to Mr Meacher.

"Britain has lost an outstanding MP and one of Parliament's finest economic minds," he said.

"Few figures in modern Britain did so much to deconstruct the madness at the heart of Tory economic policy and why it was and is doomed to failure.

"Michael was a familiar face at the offices of the Morning Star, the paper for which he was a valued and insightful columnist and which he supported through thick and thin. We will all miss him."
