McCoy bids farewell at Sandown Park

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

All eyes of course will rightly be on the masterful Tony McCoy in action at Sandown Park for the final rides of his career. Surprisingly he has just the two bookings and sadly it is hard to see either winning.

The big race of the day is the Gold Cup Handicap Chase at 3.50. Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls hold the key to the weights and Rocky Creek will have to give Bobs Worth 4lbs at the top end, something that would have been inconceivable a couple of years ago.

I thought Rocky went with no purpose in the National and looked a tired horse and I doubt he will be able to give the weight away all round as this looks a field with a lot more strength in depth than the rivals he put to the sword at Kempton Park.

Bobs Worth has very solid claims if Henderson has him back to anything near his best, in fact he could run to within 10lbs of that mark and still be involved here off a rating of 159.

But for me one of the most important factors when coming into this contest is being relatively fresh and I think that Tony Martin has probably had this race in mind for some time for Guess Again.

A lightly raced 10-year-old, he has only had 14 career starts, eight over fences winning three of them.

Last time out in the Kim Muir he was travelling with great urgency when coming down at the 14th and granted a clear round here I think he will reverse that form with The Package.

The ground won’t be a problem for him and his jumping is usually spot on to boot and he gets the vote over Bobs Worth and Just A Par.

The last named has been crying out for a test such as this and if he travels better than he did at Chepstow last time out his undoubted stamina off his lightweight could tell in the closing stages up the hill.

Elsewhere on the card I am prepared to give The Ould Lad another chance when he contests the two-and-a-half mile novices handicap chase at 5.00.

He is dropping in distance here but with a fast pace literally guaranteed he could come into his own turning for home and gets the vote over Generous Ransom and the disappointing but talented Cocktails At Dawn.

Elsewhere, at Ripon Pinzolo may defy top weight in a cracking mile and a half handicap at 4.00, Sirius Prospect can land the feature King Richard III Stakes at Leicester at 4.15, while the best bets at Wolverhampton are Top Boy (7.15) and Sequester at 8.15
