Arts Ahead: Swanhunter

LEEDS/TOURING OPERAS Swanhunter Howard Assembly Room New Briggate April 16-18

Swanhunter is an imaginative chamber opera, based on the Finnish folk epic The Kalevala, which is aimed at children aged 7+ and adults.

Composed by Jonathan Dove and with a libretto by Alasdair Middleton, it tells the tale of Lemminkainen who, against his mother’s wishes, travels to the icy north in search of a bride.

Impossible tasks await him — he must hunt the devil’s elk, ride the devil’s horse and shoot a swan.

This Opera North co-production with The Wrong Crowd theatre company is a fusion of opera and puppetry, which makes an ideal introduction to music theatre for children.

Tours until May 3.operanorth.co.uk
