Make or break for Tim's Tottenham

Sherwood issues rallying cry to his team ahead of vital clash

Tottenham v FC Dnipro, ITV1, 8.05pm

Tim Sherwood heads into tonight's Europa League second leg against FC Dnipro knowing that failure to overturn a 1-0 deficit could be catastrophic for Tottenham's season.

Spurs suffered a second successive defeat when beaten 1-0 at Norwich on Sunday, having lost the first leg of their last-32 clash away to tonight's opponents earlier in the week.

Sherwood's men are now in fifth place in the Premier League, six points behind rampant Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification.

However, Sherwood is still remaining upbeat of leading Spurs to success on all fronts this season and he sees no reason why his team cannot produce the required response to set themselves up for testing fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal in the next few weeks.

"Good players and good teams come back when they're down and that's what we've got to do straight away," Sherwood said.

"You can't crawl into a corner and hide. You have to confront it and have a go.

"We want to progress in this competition, it means a lot to us.

"It's a long competition. On quality you have to say the Champions League is hardest, but on endurance you have to say it's the Europa League. It is sapping.

"It was always going to be tough to get into the top four, there are more teams than ever fighting for it.

"But we know we still have an opportunity."

Tottenham will bid farewell to Jermain Defoe tonight with Sherwood hailing him as a club legend.

The England striker, who has scored 143 goals in two spells with Spurs, is about to complete his move to Toronto in the MLS, who agreed a £5m deal for him last month.

A hamstring strain means the 31-year-old will miss the chance to sign off with another goal at White Hart Lane, but he will be on the pitch at half-time of the clash with Dnipro to say his goodbyes.

Sherwood said: "Jermain Defoe is, possibly along with Jimmy Greaves, one of the best goalscorers this club has ever seen.

"Let's hope we can find another one like Jermain Defoe because he is all about goals and he always played with all his heart whenever he put on the shirt.

"Everyone appreciated his efforts and he certainly is a legend at this football club."

Defoe's absence means the goalscoring duties will once again fall to Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado.

Key midfielder Sandro will be available for the second-leg while Etienne Capoue, who picked up an ankle injury at Norwich, and Danny Rose are out.

But fellow full-back Kyle Walker could return from a hip injury.
