Maria Duarte reviews Drone (15)

Directed by Tonje Hessen Schei 4/5

TONJE HESSEN SCHEI’S insightful documentary lifts the lid on the CIA’s covert drone war and the widespread deadly consequences of it.

The film makes for shocking viewing.

Through interviews with former drone pilots, key players within the military, the US government and civilian survivors, Drone reveals crucial details about the remotely controlled war the CIA is waging in Pakistan and the human cost of it.

The grim reality is that,  probably at this very moment, unmanned robots are being used to fight battles and they are being operated from thousands of miles away in Nevada by ex-video gamers who are recruited by the military as pilots because of their skills and dexterity.

In a chilling moment, a former drone pilot reveals “it was just point and click.” But they are killing real people. Since 2004 over 3,000 people, including more than 800 civilians and 200 children, have perished in drone attacks in Waziristan during the US “war on terror.”

Thanks to CIA secrecy, no-one is being held accountable. This is as riveting and comprehensive an examination of drone warfare as you’re likely to see. Highly recommended.
