Land Registry workers pledge 48-hour walkout

LAND Registry workers will be going on strike for 48 hours next week, union officials announced yesterday.

The two-day walkout comes after ministers expressed the desire to sell the long-established institution, putting thousands of people at risk of losing their jobs.

“Despite clear opposition from staff, lawyers and industry professionals, it appears ministers are determined to hand over yet another successful public asset to the private sector,” said Civil Service union PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka.

A total of 14 offices of the land and property ownership register across England and Wales are set to close between May 14 and 15.

The Land Registry is a self-financing branch of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills lead by Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable and was responsible for a £99 million profits for the Treasury last year.
