Winchester lecturers lead the way in strike for pay

ACADEMICS start a new wave of strike action this week by targeting open days and graduation ceremonies at individual universities.

Staff at the University of Winchester will launch the action on Friday, being the first university to hold an open day or graduation ceremony.

The strike is part of a bitter row over pay, with employers proposing an increase of just 1.1 per cent for 2016, even though vice-chancellors have received a 6.1 per cent rise.

University and College Union (UCU) members will picket from 8.30am on Friday outside the main campus’s Sparkford Road entrance and the Romsey Road entrance to the West Downs campus.

Parents and prospective students arriving for the open day will be lobbied by UCU members seeking to explain the union’s fight for fair pay.

Branch chair Mick Jardine said: “Parents would be shocked to learn that their children are likely to be taught by staff on zero-hours contracts.”
