Jowell leads in Labour’s London mayoralty race

TESSA JOWELL is leading the race to become Labour’s candidate in next year’s London mayoral election.

Labour members in at least 17 of London’s 73 constituencies met on Thursday evening to decide who their branches would nominate.

Each constituency Labour Party (CLP) can make two nominations and at least one must be for a woman.

The latest round of selection meetings left Ms Jowell with 31 nominations, ahead of her main challenger Sadiq Khan on 23.

But Mr Khan has won influential backing from the Unite and GMB unions.

GMB national officer Gary Doolan said: “GMB members want a mayor who will speak up for ordinary working people, who are finding it virtually impossible to survive, let alone live a full life in London.”

Tottenham MP David Lammy currently has eight nominations, Hackney North MP Diane Abbott has four, rail expert Christian Wolmar has two and Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas has one.

Candidates need the backing of at least five CLPs to get on the ballot paper.
