Burkina Faso: Zida urges no reprisals against failed coup guard

TRANSITIONAL prime minister Yacouba Isaac Zida appealed to citizens at the weekend not to attack members of the presidential guard as they are being disbanded and disarmed.

He urged people to remain calm and exercise restraint as reports emerged of presidential guard members and their families being attacked.

The army has begun collecting the weapons of the presidential guard, adding that it would take days to completely disarm the group after transitional president Michel Kafando announced its disbandment on Friday night.

Presidential guards arrested Mr Kafando and the interim prime minister on September 16 and announced the coup later.

General Gilbert Diendere took power for about a week before the transitional government was reinstated on Wednesday.

Mr Zida also announced that the government is freezing the assets of 14 coup leaders and three political parties for three months while an investigation determines who should stand trial for the short-lived rebellion.
