Afghan peace talks begin

REPRESENTATIVES of four nations met in the Afghan capital Kabul yesterday for a second round of talks aimed at ending the 15-year war.

Senior diplomats from Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the US gathered for the one-day meeting a week after a first round of discussions in Pakistani capital Islamabad.

Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani opened the meeting at the presidential palace by calling on the absent Taliban to “accept the government’s call for peace through dialogue.”

The Afghan election commission said yesterday that delayed elections, originally scheduled for last June, will be held on October 15 this year.
