Petro Poroshenko: Ukraine and rebel forces have withdrawn most heavy weapons

UKRAINIAN President Petro Poroshenko said yesterday that anti-fascist fighters in the east had withdrawn a “significant” amount of heavy weaponry.

He also that claimed government forces had pulled back “the lion’s share” of their rockets and artillery.

But Ukraine’s military immediately contradicted him, claiming the rebels were amassing heavy weapons in depots around Donetsk despite the ceasefire.

Under the February ceasefire, both sides were due to pull back heavy weapons by the start of March. The ceasefire appears to be taking hold despite continuing clashes.

Meanwhile Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he had ordered work on returning Crimea to Russia to begin at a meeting on February 22 last year after Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych was ousted in a coup by right-wing forces.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said that Kiev will get significant support from the EU.

“I need to underline again the financial engagement we will have to Ukraine,” he noted.
