About 16,000 workers at two subsidiaries of Taiwanese touch-screen maker Wintek Corporation returned to work yesterday after striking over holiday benefits.
A Wintek executive said the strikes started on Tuesday at subsidiary Dongguan Masstop Liquid Crystal Display and spread on Wednesday to Wintek Technology. Each factory employs about 8,000 workers.
Wintek is a long-time supplier of Apple but it was not clear who the factories’ customers were.
Six police vehicles were parked outside the gates of the Wintek factory on an industrial estate in Dongguan yesterday.
A manager claimed: “Things have been settled, the workers are back to work.”
Workers involved in the strike said recruitment adverts had offered cash bonuses equal to half a month’s salary for three holidays. But they were only given 100 yuan, a piece of chicken and a banana — for last year’s mid-autumn festival they had received 700 yuan and a box of traditional mooncakes.
