India: Alleged rapist diplomat returns to Saudi Arabia

SAUDI diplomat Majed Hassan Ashoor has left India under diplomatic immunity after two Nepalese maids claimed he raped and abused them.

The two women, who worked in the diplomat’s luxury apartment, accused him of illegally confining and raping them during the past few months.

“The first secretary, being a diplomat, is governed by the provisions of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations,” said Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup.

Police removed the women from the apartment last week after receiving a complaint from a non-governmental organisation.

They have since returned to Nepal.

Although a case was registered against the diplomat, police could not act against him because of diplomatic immunity.

The Saudi embassy denied the allegations and refused to let police question him.

Nepalese ambassador Deep Upadhyay insisted that the case should be pursued even if the diplomat had left the country, declaring: “The victims must get justice.”
