CATALONIA’S regional parliament threw down the gauntlet to Madrid yesterday by approving a plan to draw up a road map for independence by 2017.
The proposal, put forward by deputies from the Together for Yes alliance and the left-wing Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), was passed by 72 votes to 63.
“There is a growing cry for Catalonia to not merely be a country but to be a state with everything that means,” said Together for Yes leader Raul Romeva.
“Today we don’t only open a new parliament. This marks a before and after.”
Spain’s Conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy reacted swiftly, giving notice that his government would challenge the decision in the constitutional court.
“Catalonia is not going anywhere. Nothing is going to break,” he declared.
Mr Rajoy added that he planned to meet Socialist Workers Party leader Pedro Sanchez to forge a common front against the Catalonian separatists.
