North-east England to host People's Assembly

A MASSIVE North East People’s Assembly event is to be staged next weekend.

The first Assembly saw a 500-strong turnout and took place last year amid growing resistance to the coalition government’s austerity programme.

The second takes place next Saturday, November 1, and will continue building a broader, more powerful anti-austerity movement.

Beth Farhat, secretary of Northern region of the TUC and a keynote speaker, said: “The North East People’s Assembly is building a grassroots movement taking action to protect our lives, our living standards, our rights, and our future.”

The event, at Northern Stage in Newcastle, will have three slogans — No More Austerity, Save our NHS, Stand up for Education.

There will be two rallies, 10 workshops and a people’s variety show in the evening with comedy, music, dance and spoken-word entertainment.

Alternatives to Austerity will be discussed by top economists James Meadway of New Economics Foundation and Andrew Fisher, author of The Failed Experiment.
