FORMER IRA commander Gerard “Jock” Davison was shot dead in Belfast yesterday morning.
The father-of-three was killed by unknown assailants in Welsh Street, in the republican Markets district, while on his way to the community centre where he worked.
Sinn Fein South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey said the killers had “robbed the community of a valuable worker and robbed a family of a loving family member.”
He would not be drawn on the killers’ identity, saying: “I am not blaming anybody. I am not getting into any speculation.”
Mr Davison was rumoured to be involved a fight that led to the 2005 death of Belfast man Robert McCartney and was one of three members expelled after an IRA probe into the death.
His uncle Terence Davison was later acquitted of the crime.
