Retail union Unite yesterday pledged to resist a threat to 100 jobs at supermarket chain Morrisons.
The firm, Britain’s fourth-largest supermarket, wants to sack the workers at its Wakefield distribution centre, which employs 1,200 staff.
It blamed difficulties caused by competition from the likes of Aldi and Lidl for the job cull.
Morrisons also plans to close one warehouse at the distribution centre, cut working hours and make drivers more “flexible.”
Unite regional officer Sarah Mitchell said: “We are in continuing talks with the management about its proposed job losses at its Wakefield distribution centre.
“Unite will be fighting very hard on behalf of our members to mitigate the impact of these job losses, which are devastating for those whose employment is under threat and for the Wakefield economy more generally.”
