Formula One: Renault dig deep to spruce up wilting Lotus

Renault announced its intention yesterday to take over the cash-strapped Lotus Formula One team.

Lotus’s problems came to a head at the Japanese Grand Prix, with members of the team seeking refuge elsewhere at the track and the drivers dining with rival teams.

Around 60 Lotus mechanics were fed in the exclusive Paddock Club, an area which is usually reserved for VIPs, sponsors and guests.

The French manufacturer said it had agreed with Lotus owners Genii Capital, a private equity firm, to sign a letter of intent about taking over the marque.

It said it was the first step to fielding a Renault team next year.
