THE Doncaster carers are reluctantly returning to work today after being given a heroes’ welcome at this weekend’s TUC demonstration in London.

About 150 Care UK staff are clocking in for their first shifts after their latest three-week strike against cruel pay cuts, which ended at midnight. 

But they go back with their heads held high after receiving an “uplifting” reception from thousands of trade unionists in Hyde Park on Saturday.

There was a huge roar as a delegation of the workers walked on stage with their Care UK strikers banner alongside their union’s general secretary Dave Prentis. 

Mr Prentis said he was “unbelievably proud” of his members for standing up to their profiteer bosses.

“They’ve been in dispute for 90 days — 90 days of strike action to stop an unscrupulous employer,” he told the crowds. 

“An unscrupulous employer cutting their pay by 35 to 40 per cent. 

“It’s immoral and we will stand with these people until we win.”

One worker told the Star she is “dreading” going back tomorrow but said she was looking forward to seeing the disabled adults they care for “because we do miss them.”

“We worry about them, but it gets to a point where enough is enough,” she said. 

“The support we’ve had today has been so uplifiting. Everyone that we passed on the march was applauding.” 

The carers also received support from Labour leader Ed Miliband on Friday when they met the Doncaster North MP as his surgery. 

Unison are set to ballot the carers for further strike action.
