Lambeth College academic strike enters fourth week amid storm of solidarity messages

Educational institutions back Lambeth College strikers in battle against degrading terms and conditions with demonstrations and fundraisers

Lambeth College strikers received solidarity messages from across Britain yesterday as their walkout entered its fourth week.

Lecturers’ union UCU organised a national day of action yesterday in support of the south London workers fighting a vicious attack on their terms and conditions.

General secretary Sally Hunt said the day was “an important opportunity for our members around the country to show they support their colleagues at Lambeth.”

Tower Hamlets College and Northampton University organised solidarity demonstrations.

Halesowen College in the Midlands raised money for the strike fund with a biscuit sale.

And an online “wall of support” was quickly swamped with messages and pictures from trade unionists declaring: “Lambeth UCU your fight is our fight.”

One message, from City Literature Institute UCU branch, read: “We deplore further erosion of conditions across further education generally and at Lambeth in particular, and we call upon management to desist.”
