Names likely to be difficult to recall for future generations at a quiz hosted by a public house, when cricket fans are asked: “Who were the hat-trick victims of Gareth Batty as Surrey claimed promotion from County Championship Division Two?”
It was the first hat-trick in first-class cricket ever for Batty too and it was fitting that the skipper should take 6-51 as the hosts completed an innings and 98-run win over Derbyshire at the Oval.
Derbyshire had slid to 9-3 after both Tom and Sam Curren took early wickets, the former also completing an excellent run out of Chesney Hughes.
Wayne Masden and Wes Durston both made fifties to lead the resistance movement but Batty then had Durston LBW before running through the lower-middle order to complete promotion glory.
Batty was quick to deflect praise and support his teammates, such as all-rounder Zafar Ansari, who hit a century in this match and forms part of an exciting generation of younger players emerging at Surrey.
