FA Cup star Danielle Carter has been left out of the upcoming England squad, with Rachel Daly and Nikita Parris being called up in yesterday’s announcement of the squad.
Carter’s sublime goal at Wembley a fortnight ago proved to be the difference as Arsenal defeated Chelsea 1-0.
However, the Gunners striker has only one cap to her name, in which she scored a hat-trick on her international debut last September, and manager Mark Sampson has overlooked her recent exploits in favour of Daly and Parris for the double-header against Serbia.
He said: “We have selected a squad that I believe can get us the six points we want against Serbia.
“Serbia will be coming here full of confidence after getting a hard-earned draw in Belgium, so we will need to produce a good performance to get the win.
“Rachel has been playing very well in the NWSL with Houston Dash and really fits the profile of a Lioness so I am delighted to welcome her into the group.”
There are also call-ups for Carter’s teammates Jodie Taylor as well as Birmingham’s Jade Moore and Manchester City’s Isobel Christiansen.
Chelsea’s Claire Rafferty misses out in favour of Man City’s Demi Stokes, who opened up the scoring when the two teams met last week, while Eni Aluko was unable to gain a place as she struggles to nail down a place in Emma Hayes’s starting 11.
“It’s great to welcome back Jade, Izzy and Jodie who have been fantastic for England every time they have been called up and they will have a big, positive impact on the group,” said Sampson.
“Our focus is to be a together group and work hard to improve in every area. Each opportunity that we get to spend time together only helps us to grow and develop as a team.
“We are excited to play in Wycombe. It’s a fantastic stadium and I know we will have many Lionesses fans who will be there to support the team.”
