In a statement issued as the result of the British general election became clear, Irish Congress of Trade Unions general secretary Peter Bunting said: “The People of Northern Ireland will suffer badly if a quarter of the Conservative manifesto is imposed.”
He pointed out that at least 7 per cent of funding for the province was under threat, with more cuts possible since British Chancellor George Osborne “is now unrestrained by the Liberal Democrats.”
Mr Bunting called on all Northern Ireland political parties to unite against further cuts.
“All MPs elected from NI should start immediate negotiations with all of the other non-Tory parties elected to Westminster, especially those new MPs from the other devolved parts of the UK,” he said.
“Devolution is perhaps the best method of protecting our people from the cynical plans of the Tories and their backers.”
