A system supposedly designed to support failed asylum-seekers was condemned in the Lords yesterday for causing "extreme humanitarian suffering."
Lib Dem Lord Roberts of Llandudno made the accusation during a debate on the azure card - a pre-payment card which can be used in designated stores to buy essential items such as food and toiletries.
"A system which was designed to prevent short-term destitution has instead enforced long-term destitution on thousands of people," he told the House.
Urging ministers to review the scheme, he said it would be better to give those refused asylum cash in hand to use where and how they wished.
