Warnock: Clattenburg’s major errors cost us another 2 points

West Brom 2-2 Crystal Palace

by Simon Williams, at The Hawthorns

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock was left frustrated for the second successive week as poor refereeing decisions cost his side victory over West Bromwich Albion.

The Eagles had taken the lead on 16 minutes when Brede Hangeland netted at the second attempt from a Yannick Bolasie corner.

And the away side were two up in first-half stoppage time when Mile Jedinak scored from the penalty spot after Bolasie had been felled by Sebastian Pocognoli.

Baggies substitute Victor Anichebe headed home a Chris Brunt corner six minutes after the break before Saido Berahino followed up his goal against Manchester United with a penalty in the dying embers of the game to give his side a share of the spoils.

But it was the incident in the build-up to Anichebe’s goal that left Warnock once again asking questions of the officials.

Palace had asked for a free-kick to be awarded by referee Mark Clattenburg after West Brom defender Craig Dawson appeared to elbow keeper Julian Speroni in the head.

The Argentinian needed five minutes of treatment before, much to his annoyance, he was replaced by Wayne Hennessey.

He said: “How one of the four officials didn’t see that I don’t know — it’s almost an assault. Dawson has a two or three-yard run up and smashes Julian in the face.

“No wonder he was a bit groggy. He wanted to carry on. I’ve not see one of those since the days of Bert Trautmann.”

Warnock was also bemused that Clattenburg failed to award a first-half penalty after Wilfried Zaha was brought down by Dawson.

“It was 100 per cent a penalty,” he said.

“People ask me why my players didn’t appeal for it, but do they want me to start getting them to surround refs like Chelsea did last week?”

But after recently being charged for misconduct by the FA for comments he made following his side’s defeat to Chelsea last Saturday, Warnock was cautious of his criticism towards Clattenburg.

He said: “I thought he (Clattenburg) had a cracking game but he’s just made two major errors that have cost us dearly.”
