Jose Mourinho led his Chelsea side to the first piece of silverware in his second spell at the club after overcoming London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley to win the League Cup yesterday.
Goals from captain John Terry and an own goal from Kyle Walker either side of the interval saw the Premier League leaders see off the challenge from Spurs.
Chelsea took the lead on 44 minutes when Terry fired his side ahead from close range. Spurs defenders failed to clear a loose ball following a free-kick by Willian. It fell to Terry, whose powerful shot ricocheted off Harry Kane and beyond goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The first half had begun at a frenetic pace. Spurs, who beat their opponents 5-3 in a dramatic league encounter on New Year’s Day, could have taken an early lead on nine minutes when Christian Eriksen struck the crossbar with a superb free-kick.
Spurs’ victory over Chelsea in this competition in 2008 was the club’s last trophy and in a positive first half for Maurico Pochettino’s men, Tottenham were more than a match for their opponents.
On 56 minutes, however, Chelsea scored their second and put themselves in a strong position in the match.
Costa, who had been relatively quiet in the match, found space in the penalty area and as his marker Walker closed him down, he played a low cross goalwards.
However, the ball clipped Walker’s boot, wrong-footing Lloris, and flew into the net.
Much was expected of Spurs’s young striker Kane. However, he was unable to create any noteworthy goal-scoring opportunities.
By the time Chelsea scored their second, Spurs looked beaten. Pochettino made a series of changes in the second half but the Blues were in control and saw out the remainder of the game with little incident.
