Russia: Syrian SNC welcomes Moscow invitation

RUSSIA has invited the main Syrian rebel group to talks in Moscow, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

A delegation of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) opposition group has been invited to visit Moscow next week.

SNC leader Badr Jamus told the Russian state news agency Sputnik that it welcomed the invitation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met former SNC leader Moaz al-Khatib and its main backers on Monday, along with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir in Qatar.

Mr Lavrov later dismissed speculation that Russia would abandon its ally Syria.

Also yesterday, Syrian army and Lebanese Hezbollah forces launched a pincer attack on rebel Ahrar al-Sham militia occupying the western mountain resort of Zabadani.

In Turkey, US drones and jets began arriving at the Incerlik airbase before air raids against Islamic State (Isis) targets in Syria.

In Tehran, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem insisted the raids should be co-ordinated with Damascus.
