A young Indian cricketer died yesterday morning after colliding with a teammate during a match on Friday.

In a match between East Bengal Club and Bhawanipore Club, 20-year-old Ankit Keshri had come on as a substitute fielder for East Bengal when he collided with bowler Sourabh Mondal while attempting to get a high catch.

Keshri fell to the floor and briefly lost consciousness on the field, but was resuscitated by teammates and rushed to a local hospital in Kolkata.

But he suffered cardiac arrest yesterday morning and passed away.

“It’s so unfortunate. He was such a promising cricketer and for him to pass away in such a manner is difficult to swallow,” said Subir Ganguly, the joint secretary of the state’s cricket association.

Former India Test captain Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter to pay tribute, saying: “Saddened by the demise of Ankit Keshri. A promising career aborted by an unfortunate incident on field.”
