Charitable trust fronts cash for rent control drive

A HOUSING campaign threatened with closure after having its funding withdrawn found new hope yesterday in a £45,500 grant by a charitable trust.

Despite not yet having reached half its target of £60,000, Generation Rent confirmed that it had secured enough cash to keep its doors open for the foreseeable future.

The Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust then piled on the extra money for a rent controls campaign in the run-up to next year’s London mayoral election.

The trust “seeks to strengthen the hand of organisations striving for reform and supports campaigns which aim to correct imbalances of power,” a spokeswoman told the Star.

“Generation Rent was awarded a grant to aid its efforts campaigning against unfair rents.”

She added that the trust was looking forward to seeing Generation Rent “make their case loud and clear.”

With two weeks of crowdfunding to go, Generation Rent said it would continue urging its supporters for donations.
