World Cup thrill moves Lionesses to world fifth

ENGLAND’S best World Cup run since 1966 has catapulted the women’s side to a best-ever fifth in the Fifa rankings.

Mark Sampson’s Lionesses clinched the bronze medal in Canada with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Germany. Die Nationalelf lost the top spot to the tournament-winning US, dropping to second.

France and runners-up Japan kept their third and fourth spots respectively to complete the top five.

Hosts Canada dropped out of the top 10 after a disappointing run at the World Cup, down three places to 11th.

Despite not seeing any summer action, Scotland rose one place to 20th.

But inactivity didn’t suit the Dragonesses so well, as Wales slipped two to 37th — a far cry from the top-10 place afforded to the men’s team under Fifa’s complex points system.

It was Singapore who suffered most from the new rankings, dropping 41 places to 142nd, just one above bottom-ranked Lesotho. Singapore’s women haven’t played a game since a 2-0 defeat to Malaysia in October 2013.
