MORNING STAR supporters climbed Kinder Scout in the Peak District yesterday on a sponsored walk to raise money for the paper.
The annual walk, organised by the Star’s north-west readers and supporters groups, marks the 1932 communist-led mass trespass of the Derbyshire moor — a landmark victory in the fight for the right to roam.
Among those who defied police and gamekeepers to climb the Kinder plateau on April 24 1932 was folk legend Ewan MacColl, who later celebrated and immortalised the walkers’ victory in his song The Manchester Rambler.
The trespass helped bring about the creation of Britain’s national parks as well as the long-distance footpaths.
