Cuba-US: Officials begin talks on reopening embassies

US and Cuban officials sat down in the State Department in Washington on Thursday to finalise talks to re-establish embassies in each other’s capitals after a half-century interruption.

Top US diplomat for Latin America Roberta Jacobson met her Cuban counterpart Josefina Vidal, although officials cautioned against an early breakthrough.

Cuba will finally be removed from the discredited US state sponsor of terrorism list next Friday.

Havana’s Interests Section in Washington has established a relationship with a US-based bank, meaning that it will no longer be restricted to cash-only operations.

The US remains intent on securing agreement that its diplomats can travel throughout Cuba to meet anti-government groups without restrictions.

Ten Cuban journalists attended Thursday’s White House briefing for the first time and press secretary Josh Earnest offered the final question to a woman reporter from Cuban National Television.

Cuban President Raul Castro recently complained about US programmes for training Cuban journalists, calling them an “illegal” infringement of state sovereignty.
