Delegates agree to abandon strike threat

ATL members dropped a threat of industrial action yesterday after a motion demanding a “significant pay rise” was amended.

A motion proposed by Brent delegate Hank Roberts said teachers had suffered a 15 per cent real-terms loss in pay.

ATL conference delegates agreed to campaign for a rise but an amendment proposed to delete a pledge to “if necessary, take part in joint action to start the process of the restoration of our real levels of pay.”

Delegates approved the amendment without debate after Mr Roberts and seconder Jacqueline Cashman, a delegate from Cumbria, accepted it as friendly.

A further motion blasted further education colleges for failing to implement pay rises agreed between unions and the Association of Colleges and asked ATL executive to name culprits.

Motions in support of strike action will be heard at the conferences of the two other leading teaching unions NUT and NASUWT, which both begin on Friday.
