Smoggy streets still an issue for Scotland’s biggest cities

Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee remain home to Scotland’s smoggiest streets, according to air-pollution campaigners.

Friends of the Earth Scotland yesterday lamented thousands of lives lost to air pollution each year as they released their latest research on nitrogen dioxide levels — a critical indicator — in Scottish cities.

EU-wide laws dictate that urban areas cannot be allowed to accumulate more than 40 microgrammes of nitrogen dioxide per cubic metre.

But tests in Glasgow’s Hope Street found 66mg, making it the vilest air found so far in Scotland. Close behind were Dundee’s Seagate with 59mg and Edinburgh’s St John’s Road with 57.

Campaigner Emilia Hanna said it was “disappointing” to see such high levels.
