Glasgow City captain Leanne Ross said yesterday that her side are fully focused on retaining the Scottish Women’s Premier League Cup when they face Hibernian tonight.
In a repeat of last year’s 4-0 victory, Glasgow — league champions for eight seasons running — are firm favourites to lift the trophy for the fourth year on the trot.
Glasgow enter the tie on the back of a tremendous 6-1 victory over Hearts on Sunday to remain top of the league on goal difference, with Hibs in second place. The league and cup holders are full of confidence, with Ross ready to take the game to her opponents.
She said: “We are prepared for tomorrow’s match, after coming through our match last Sunday without any injury problems. We are set on taking the match to Hibs and holding on to the League Cup trophy.”
With both teams still unbeaten in the league after eight games and joint top of the league, it is sure to be a tight affair. Hibs have won the league three times, the last being the 2006-7 season, before Glasgow began their dominance of the division.
When the two sides met earlier on in the season, the match finished 3-3 and Hibs captain Joelle Murray feels that the previous encounter stands them in good stead for tomorrow.
“We have had a good start to the season and matched Glasgow City earlier in the season,” said Murray. “We obviously show our opponents respect but ultimately we know that we have what it takes to win this.”
The final is set to make history, with the match becoming the first women’s football game to be streamed live on YouTube.
