PR firm boss nets ‘eye-watering’ £43m

PR FIRM WPP’S boss Martin Sorrell banked an “eye-watering” £43 million last year, it admitted yesterday.

It is the biggest chief executive package in the FTSE 100 Index of Britain’s biggest public companies and more than twice as much as his nearest rival.

His total award, swollen by a £36m contribution from a controversial long-term executive bonus scheme, was 44 per cent higher than in 2013.

It included a basic salary of £1.15m, a pension and other benefits of £2.2m and short-term incentives of £3.56m.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said it was further evidence of how the super-rich lived in a different universe to everyone else.

“Britain’s fat cat bosses are hoarding earnings owed to staff for themselves,” she said.

“That’s why we need workers on remuneration committees to make sure top directors’ pay is kept in touch with reality.”
