Sinfield stars as Rhinos charge towards title

James Nalton gives a rundown of the latest movements in the Rugby League Super League

LEEDS RHINOS extended their lead at the top of the Super League table to three points, as nearest rivals Wigan Warriors suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Catalans Dragons in the south of France.

Kevin Sinfield was back in the Leeds line-up after sitting out the last three, and his try and six goals not only helped his side to a 36-16 win over visitors Hull KR, but also took him to third in the list of the sport’s all-time points scorers.

His personal haul of 16 points took him to a total of 4,062 career points, ahead of Gus Risman and behind Jim Sullivan and Neil Fox who both racked up over 6,000 points during their careers.

Wigan dropped down to third thanks to their loss in France, as hat-tricks from Zeb Taia and Tony Gigot helped Catalans to a 58-16 victory.

Dragons’ Australian halfback Todd Carney was instrumental in the middle of the park on his return to action after injury, while winger Fouad Yaha also crossed for two tries.

The Warriors’ defeat meant that Saint Helens moved into second place, thanks to their 17-10 win in Hull on Friday night. Saints winger Tommy Makinson scored in the corner from a Travis Burns kick in the second half, converting his own try to give his side the points they needed.

Jordan Turner’s last minute drop-goal added the extra point to make sure of the win, in a game which could have gone either way.

Huddersfield Giants held onto fourth spot as they ran out 24-16 winners in a much talked about game against Castleford at The Jungle.

Two decisions from the video referee caused much of the controversy, as it wasn’t clear if Eorl Crabtree’s late try had touched the line, and a questionable grounding from Craig Huby earlier in the game led to protests from the Tigers as both tries were given.

The match saw another controlling midfield display from Giants halfback Danny Brough, who’s been one of the competition’s stand-out players.

Elsewhere, Widnes and Warrington both won away from home, as hat-tricks from Stefan March and Gene Ormsby saw their respective sides pick up the win.

Ormsby’s spectacular try in the corner was the highlight of the Wolves’ 34-18 win at Salford, while Widnes beat Wakefield by 30 points to 18, consigning bottom of the table Wildcats to yet another defeat.
