Philippines: Manila wants US warships in disputed South China Sea

THE Philippines backed the latest US provocations against Beijing in the South China Sea yesterday.

Washington has threatened to send a US navy ship into Chinese territorial waters around reclaimed land in the Spratly Islands in a challenge to Beijing’s claimed sovereignty.

US newspaper Navy Times reported last week that the military may soon receive approval for the incursion.

Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs said yesterday that the violation “would be consistent with international law and a rules-based order for the region.”

Six nations, including the Philippines and China, claim territory in the archipelago, a crucial sea lane for China’s oil imports from the Middle East.

Former Philippine national security adviser Roilo Golez called for a meeting of top Philippine security officials, warning: “This is a situation where a world superpower and an emerging one are about to go on a collision course. We should not be caught by surprise.”
