Rail adviser lays down tracks for privatisation

THE Tories’ supposedly independent rail adviser yesterday signalled her intention to put Network Rail on track to privatisation.

Not content with every rail route being run for profit, the Tories appointed transport executive Nicola Shaw to examine a sell-off of the tracks themselves.

A preliminary report reveals she is considering “full privatisation” or the partial “sale of routes/assets,” mirroring last year’s carve-up of Royal Mail.

Ms Shaw insisted that the future for the publicly owned rail-maintenance company “may range from full privatisation to full nationalisation.”

But Labour shadow transport secretary Lilian Greenwood said: “This report opens the door to the total privatisation of Britain’s railways.

“The last time the Tories sold off our rail infrastructure it was a disaster that put passengers in danger.”

Rail union RMT leader Mick Cash said: “It is clear as day that the political drive behind this report into Network Rail is all about privatisation and cuts that will wreak chaos across our rail infrastructure.”
