Former Olympian makes NFL team
GRIDIRON: Former British Olympian Lawrence Okoye signed for the Arizona Cardinals yesterday after being waived by NFL rivals the San Francisco 49ers.
Okoye, who still holds the British record for the discus, was let go by San Francisco last week after two seasons trying to establish himself in American football having swapped the track for the gridiron following the 2012 Olympics.
Franchises finalised their 53-man rosters over the weekend but Okoye revealed he has been given a shot by the Cardinals, who, like the Niners, play in the NFC West, and will wind up on their practice squad where he can continue his NFL education.
Police searching for Bangladesh cricketer
CRICKET: Police in Bangladesh were yesterday looking for cricket player Shahadat Hossain and his wife in connection for the alleged abuse of their 11-year-old daughter.
The girl was found on the streets and was taken to hospital, with the police now looking for the 29-year-old.
Shahadat became the first Bangladeshi to be added to the Lord’s Honours Board after taking five wickets against England in 2010.
England find camp for Euros
FOOTBALL: England will base themselves in the French town of Chantilly on the outskirts of Paris at Euro 2016.
Two days after England secured qualification to the European Championship, the Football Association confirmed the team will be based at the exclusive Auberge du Jeu de Paume hotel during the tournament.
Roy Hodgson’s squad will train at the training ground for local amateur club US Chantilly.
Carrick pulls out of Swiss clash
FOOTBALL: Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad for tonight’s Euro 2016 qualifying clash with Switzerland at Wembley.
Carrick picked up a calf injury in training and has been sent home to parent club Manchester United.
