Scotland: SNP and Labour target carers and workers in latest pledges

RIVAL leaders of the SNP and Scottish Labour yesterday targeted carers and workers respectively as the election campaign moved into its final fortnight.

Launching Scottish Labour’s Workplace Manifesto in Glasgow, leader Jim Murphy said only his party could guarantee a “fair economy,” with policies like raising the minimum wage and extending the living wage into low-paid jobs in the private sector.

Left wing MSP Neil Findlay said he was “delighted” with Scottish Labour’s workplace manifesto.

He said it is “packed with policies to improve the lives of workers” including action on ending zero-hours contracts, ending exploitation by employment agencies and scrapping tribunal fees.

Nicola Sturgeon committed SNP MPs in Westminster to argue for extra support for carers across Britain.

The SNP leader said her party’s proposal would deliver up to £600 extra for more than 100,000 unpaid carers in Scotland.
