FIVE people were arrested as anti-racist campaigners clashed with Islamophobic marchers in Australia over the weekend.
The Reclaim Australia movement held marches in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Canberra and other cities across the country against what they called the “Islamisation” of the country.
The march in Sydney yesterday only attracted about 150 participants, some dressed as Spartans from the Hollywood film 300 and others waving the flag of the Eureka rebellion of the 1850s, a symbol of Australian independence.
The five were arrested in clashes with a counter-demonstration, despite a police buffer zone between the two.
In Melbourne on Saturday, police used pepper spray as 3,000 anti-racists gathered to oppose 200 members of the Patriot Defence League.
Islamic Research and Education Academy president Waseem Razvi told Russia Today: “We are a 2 per cent minority here, so to say that radical Islam is taking over Australia is completely false.”
