Vigil to call for Aamer’s timely release

A PROTEST vigil will be held today calling for the immediate release of Shaker Aamer, who has spent 5,000 days in Guantanamo Bay.

It marks the last day of the 30-day notice period given by the US government to Congress to release Mr Aamer, the only remaining British detainee at the US prison in Cuba, and he is due to leave tomorrow.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Labour candidate for London mayor Sadiq Khan and MPs Andy Slaughter and Andrew Mitchell have all been part of the campaign to have him freed.

Supporters of Mr Aamer — detained for nearly 14 years without charge or trial — including shadow chancellor John McDonnell will protest outside Downing Street from 2pm.

“Shaker has borne these years with amazing dignity and fortitude. He bears no anger. His only wish is to be with his loved ones at last,” said Save Shaker Aamer campaign chairwoman Joy Hurcombe.

At least 360 people have pledged 24-hour fasts to encourage Mr Aamer to drop his hunger strike.
