O’Grady: Let workers strip off in the heat

WORKPLACES could be set for the partial Monty — if bosses follow new heatwave advice from the TUC.

With soaring temperatures expected to hit 32°C in some parts of England tomorrow, companies are being urged to let staff ditch jackets and ties in favour of vest tops and shorts.

Trade unionists are also demanding more breaks, portable fans and water coolers to help workers toil through the sweltering conditions.

“It’s no fun working in a baking office or factory and employers should do all they can to take the temperature down,” said TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady.

“Clearly vest tops and shorts are not suitable attire for all front-line staff but those not dealing with the public should be able to discard their tights, ties and suits.”

Workplaces are deemed in breach of the law if their room temperature falls below 16 degrees, but there is no upper limit.

The TUC argues for a 30°C upper limit, with bosses obliged to roll out cooling techniques if thermometers hit 24.
