Myanmar police end student protest with baton charge

POLICE and hired thugs in Myanmar charged a group of 200 student protesters yesterday, beating them with batons and dragging them into lorries.

It ended a stand-off that started a week ago when the students began their sit-in on a road near a monastery in Letpadan in protest at a new education law.

Earlier in the day, the two sides had appeared close to an agreement.

Police said the students could march to a nearby town before being transported to Yangon in government lorries, but when they demanded the protesters refrain from shouting slogans or waving flags along the way, agreement evaporated.

More than 400 police formed human chains to block the road as protesters tried to push their way through.

Officers then turned on the students and the monks who had joined the protest.

Many of the demonstrators suffered head injuries.
